Michal Marcinko, MD student

The role of the IGF2 mRNA binding protein 2 (IGF2BP2) in growth control and diabetes

Michal Marcinko is a MD student at the MLU Halle-Wittenberg. He investigates the effect of single-nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) in IGF2BP2 genomic region and its role in the pathogenesis of type 2 diabetes.

Insulin-like growth factor 2 mRNA-binding protein 2 (IGF2BP2/IMP2 belongs to family of mRNA-binding proteins involved in RNA localization, stability and translation. An association between IGF2BP2 and type 2 diabetes was inferred from a series of GWA studies demonstrating that SNPs of IGF2BP2 provided a moderately increased risk of developing type 2 diabetes.
