Summary:

The Robert Koch Institute (RKI) estimates influenza-associated excess mortality and excess hospitalizations in Germany. However, the models used by the RKI have several limitations. Excess mortality is not estimated for different age groups, not stratified by gender, and is estimated only on a monthly basis. Moreover, excess hospitalizations are estimated from the model of excess consultations and hospitalization rates and are not based on a separate model. This research project aims to develop optimized models that overcome the limitations. Statistical models for estimating excess mortality and excess hospitalizations in Germany will be developed using methods comparable to the RKI models. This will ensure comparability with previous RKI models. This project is carried out in cooperation with Wissenschaftliches Institut für Gesundheitsökonomie und Gesundheitssystemforschung (WIG2) in Leipzig.
